What a year! 2018 has shown us many exciting stories and changes from Zambia’s key tourism players. Here we take a step back, revisit the year and celebrate all they have accomplished to make Zambia the aspiring destination it is today!

Mwamba - Africa’s Best Place to Hide
Founded in the nineties on an active poacher's campsite, Mwamba Bush Camp epitomises the Shenton Safaris' ethos of conservation through tourism. Following in sister camp Kaingo's footsteps, Shenton Safaris added a solar farm to Mwamba this year, allowing for hidden luxuries such as electric fans and charging points in all of their thatch chalets. A full refurbishment of the camp has every aspect of Mwamba finely tuned to the Shenton family's rhythm and stunning aesthetic.

Lose yourself in the stars at Bilimungwe Bushcamp
A nature lover’s paradise, The Bushcamp Company’s Bilimungwe Bushcamp introduced a new level of serenity this year with their new ‘Star Deck’. Stretching out over the plain in front of camp, in the remote southern section of South Luangwa National Park, the star deck offers an unparalleled view of the southern skies. Designed for optimal stargazing, it’s also the perfect spot to enjoy sundowners, a romantic dinner for two, and even sunrise yoga. Where else can you sit back and watch wildlife wander past as you learn about the majesty of the sky?

Kafunta Safaris Celebrate 20 Years
2018 marked Kafunta Safaris 20 year anniversary. Anke Cowen stated "We’ve seen the changes in the Luangwa Valley over more than 20 years. The game viewing has increased but so has human settlement in the area. We’ve seen a change in tourism, some camps have gone, others changed ownership and new camps have been built. Few have stayed the same!" Here’s to the next 20 years!

Keeping it green in 2018
Driven by their passion to preserve nature through sustainable tourism and community involved programs, Green Safaris have ventured into a number of projects including The Ila Community Farm, The Likoma Reforestation Project, Panthera Zambia’s new radio network, Zambian Carnivore Project’s new base station, a clean-up Likoma project and many more.

The Green Safaris team are hard at work in the areas they are active with one aim in mind, to preserve Africa’s pristine wilderness.
The revival of Lion Camp
It was back in 2017 when Lion Camp began their complete renovation. Being one of Zambia’s oldest and most iconic camps, it was much anticipated and once the announcement of their re-opening came about in early 2018, it was safe to say it set the standard for the 2018 Zambian safari season.

Luxury and exclusivity at Sausage Tree Camp
Sausage Tree Camp in the Lower Zambezi also underwent some major changes this year- an entire refurbishment, in which the luxury suites have been completely rebuilt and re-decorated. They also introduced the offer of guaranteed, free, private guiding at their camp, allowing guests the flexibility to tailor-make each day of their safari.

"The tents at Sausage Tree are without doubt the best (including the USB point and power banks). We loved being on the river, the canoeing and successful fishing plus, of course, the game drives, the private anniversary sundowner and lunch on the island." - Charles and Rosie, Australia

Anabezi support Zambia Wildlife Authority

You can't miss Waterberry Zambezi Lodge
We all know that feeling. You’ve been travelling for what seems like days, you’re in a country you're somewhat unfamiliar with, you’re very hot and rather tired, just had to queue for a confusing visa, eventually found your luggage and you now need to find your driver... Waterberry Zambezi Lodge did some brainstorming on how to make this last step of the journey simpler. Their result? They dressed their drivers in bright pink shirts! You just can’t miss them and their guests are delighted!

Adventure on a budget
The Victoria Falls Waterfront recently expanded to include 16 Adventure Village Rooms in addition to their 20 chalets, 20 tents and 3 suites. Located in the garden these new individual rooms all offer large en-suite units with air-conditioning, free Wifi and all modern amenities. All guests may enjoy the use of two swimming pools, a festive bar, a restaurant with an unbeatable view of the Zambezi River and Peppino’s Pizza Oven.

Hide up in the trees in Kafue
The 2018 season saw the introduction of the new ‘Treehouse Hide’ at Jeffrey and McKeith’s Musekese Camp. The raised platform stands 5 metres above the ground and overlooks the ‘Eden’ lagoon as well as offers unparalleled 360 degree views over a vast grassland plain. The treehouse has offered some fascinating game viewing but has also proven to be a great place to read a book and soak up the tranquility of the bush.

As 2018 was only the second full season for Ntemwa-Busanga, the camp is continually evolving, however major developments this year included the extension of the camps main deck as well as a new stretch-canvas roof above it. This has ensured any early rains wouldn’t dampen spirits (or cameras!) and now guests can enjoy expansive views of the Busanga Plains.
